GE Dishwasher Not Draining?
Water pooling in the bottom of your GE dishwasher is almost always a blockage rather than a pump failure. Here’s how to troubleshoot it step by step.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
GE dishwashers have a filter system in the bottom of the tub. Pull out the lower rack, then remove the filter assembly by turning the upper filter counterclockwise. Rinse both pieces under running water with a soft brush. Clogged filters account for the majority of GE dishwasher drain complaints.
With the filter removed, look down into the sump (the well where the filter sits). Use a flashlight to check for broken glass, food debris, or foreign objects that may be blocking the drain inlet. Remove anything you find.
The drain hose runs from the bottom of the dishwasher to the garbage disposal or sink drain. Check for kinks, especially where the hose enters the cabinet side wall. If the hose is corrugated (ridged), debris can accumulate in the ridges and restrict flow.
If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, the inlet can become clogged with food buildup. Run the disposal with hot water for 30 seconds before starting the dishwasher. For a new disposal, remember to knock out the drain plug.
Place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the top rack and run a hot cycle with nothing else inside. This helps dissolve grease and mineral deposits that may be partially blocking the drain path.

When to call a professional
If you hear the drain pump running (a distinct humming/whirring during the drain cycle) but water isn’t leaving, there may be a broken impeller inside the pump or a blockage in the drain check valve. If the pump makes no noise at all, the motor has failed and needs replacement.
