The r1 error code on an Ariston refrigerator indicates a fault with the fridge compartment temperature probe. Specifically, the control board has detected either an open circuit or a short circuit condition in the probe circuit. An open circuit means the electrical path through the probe has been broken, often due to a disconnected wire, corroded connector, or a failed sensor element. A short circuit means two conductors in the probe circuit are making unintended contact, causing resistance readings that fall outside the expected range. In either case, the control board can no longer receive accurate temperature data from the fridge compartment.

The fridge probe is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor, meaning its electrical resistance changes predictably with temperature. When the board reads resistance values that correspond to an implausibly high or low temperature, or detects no signal at all, it triggers the r1 code. The probe is typically mounted inside the fridge compartment and connected to the control board via a wiring harness. Failure points include the probe element itself, the connector pins, and any section of wiring running between the probe and the board.

When r1 is active, the refrigerator does not shut down entirely. Instead, the compressor switches to a timed operating cycle based on ambient room temperature, according to a preset table in the control logic. This keeps the compartment reasonably cool while the fault persists. If the probe fault is intermittent and the probe begins returning valid readings, the error will clear automatically without requiring a manual reset.
