What C25 means on a Dacor oven

The C25 error code on a Dacor oven indicates that the control board has detected a shorted condition in the ambient temperature thermistor. The ambient thermistor is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistor mounted inside the oven control cavity, separate from the oven cavity sensor. Its job is to monitor the temperature of the control board environment itself, protecting the electronics from overheating. When the thermistor shorts internally, its resistance drops to near zero ohms, which signals an out-of-range condition to the control board and triggers the C25 fault.

A shorted thermistor is distinct from an open thermistor fault. In a short condition, the sensor's resistance collapses rather than going infinite, which can cause the control board to read an artificially extreme temperature value. This can prevent normal oven operation as a protective measure. The thermistor is typically a two-wire component connected directly to the main control board via a wiring harness.

The most common root causes include a failed thermistor probe itself, damaged wiring between the probe and the control board, or a pinched or melted wire creating a short to ground or between conductors. In less common cases, the control board's input circuit for the thermistor may be damaged, producing a false short reading even when the thermistor and wiring check out correctly. Proper diagnosis requires measuring the thermistor's resistance with a multimeter and inspecting the harness for visible damage.

Common causes of C25

  1. 01

    Failed ambient thermistor

    Part replacement

The thermistor itself has internally shorted, causing its resistance to drop to near zero. This is the most likely cause and can be confirmed by disconnecting the thermistor and measuring its resistance with a multimeter at room temperature.

  2. 02

    Shorted or pinched wiring harness

    Wiring / connection

The wires connecting the thermistor to the control board may be pinched, melted, or damaged, causing a short between conductors or to the chassis ground. Inspect the harness routing for any contact with hot surfaces or sharp metal edges.

  3. 03

    Connector corrosion or moisture intrusion

    Wiring / connection

Moisture or corrosion at the thermistor connector can bridge the two signal pins and simulate a shorted thermistor reading. Inspect the connector for discoloration, corrosion, or residue and clean or replace as needed.

  4. 04

Damaged control board thermistor input circuit

    Part replacement

If the thermistor and wiring both test within normal resistance ranges, the fault may originate in the control board's input circuitry for the ambient sensor. This is less common but requires board replacement to resolve.

Frequently asked questions about C25

What does C25 mean on a Dacor oven?
C25 means the control board has detected a shorted ambient temperature thermistor. This thermistor monitors the temperature inside the control cavity to protect the electronics. A short in this sensor causes its resistance to collapse, sending an invalid signal to the control board and triggering the fault code. The oven may stop operating normally until the fault is resolved.
Can I fix a C25 error on my Dacor oven myself?
A knowledgeable DIYer with a multimeter can diagnose the fault by checking the thermistor's resistance and inspecting the wiring harness for visible damage. Replacing the ambient thermistor is a relatively straightforward repair if the component is accessible. However, if the control board itself is faulty, board replacement is more complex and may be better suited for a qualified technician.
Will resetting the oven clear the C25 error code?
Resetting the oven by cutting power at the breaker for a few minutes may temporarily clear the code, but it will return as soon as the control board runs its diagnostic check again if the underlying fault is still present. A reset alone is not a fix. The thermistor, wiring, and connectors need to be physically inspected and tested to resolve the fault permanently.
Is it safe to use my Dacor oven while the C25 code is active?
It is not recommended to continue using the oven while a C25 fault is active. The ambient thermistor protects the control board electronics from heat damage, and operating without a functioning sensor removes that protection. Continued use could lead to control board damage or unpredictable oven behavior. The fault should be diagnosed and repaired before resuming normal cooking.
How much does it cost to repair a Dacor oven C25 error?
If only the ambient thermistor needs replacement, parts and labor costs are generally modest, typically ranging from around $75 to $200 depending on the specific model and technician rates in your area. If the control board is the faulty component, costs increase significantly, often ranging from $300 to $600 or more including parts and labor. Getting a diagnostic visit from a qualified technician can help pinpoint the exact cause before committing to a repair cost.
