The A9 code indicates an electronic expansion valve coil abnormality where the microcomputer detected an abnormal pin input during its initialization sequence. The electronic expansion valve regulates refrigerant flow in the indoor unit, and its coil connects to the indoor PCB at the X7A connector. This fault prevents normal startup until the issue is diagnosed and corrected.

The unit will generally not operate normally while the A9 fault is active, as the error is detected at initialization and prevents the system from running. Attempting to force operation with a faulty expansion valve could result in improper refrigerant flow and potential compressor damage. It is best to address the fault before resuming use.

Repair costs vary depending on what is found during diagnosis. If only the connector needs reseating, the cost may be limited to a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150.
