What RT means on a Denso air conditioner
The RT error code on a Denso air conditioner indicates a defect detected on the room thermistor circuit, specifically the thermistor connected to connector J101 on the indoor unit control board. The room thermistor is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistor that continuously monitors the ambient air temperature entering the unit. The control board reads the thermistor's resistance value and translates it into a temperature reading used to regulate compressor operation and maintain the set comfort level. When the board detects a resistance value that falls outside the expected range, either too low (indicating a short circuit) or infinite (indicating an open circuit), it triggers the RT fault code and shuts down normal operation to prevent inaccurate temperature control.
A short circuit in the thermistor causes the resistance to drop near zero ohms, which makes the control board interpret the room as extremely hot. An open circuit causes resistance to read as infinite, making the board interpret the room as extremely cold or the sensor as completely disconnected. Both conditions prevent accurate temperature feedback and cause the system to fault out. The thermistor itself, its wiring harness, the connector at J101, or the control board's thermistor input circuit can each be the source of the fault.
The first diagnostic step is to disconnect and firmly reconnect the room thermistor at J101, as an intermittent or corroded connection can mimic a true component failure. If the error persists after reseating the connector, the thermistor should be tested with a multimeter for resistance continuity across its terminals and compared against the expected resistance curve for the operating temperature. A thermistor that reads zero ohms or open circuit under ambient conditions has failed and requires replacement.

Common causes of RT
- 01
Failed room thermistor
Part replacementThe thermistor itself has developed an internal short or open circuit and is no longer outputting a valid resistance signal. Testing the thermistor with a multimeter at ambient temperature will show near-zero ohms or an open reading, confirming failure.
- 02
Loose or disconnected connector at J101
Wiring / connectionThe thermistor plug at connector J101 on the control board may have vibrated loose or was not fully seated, causing an intermittent or permanent open circuit. Reseating the connector firmly is the first step before assuming component failure.
- 03
Damaged thermistor wiring harness
Part replacementThe wiring between the thermistor and J101 can become pinched, chafed, or corroded, creating an open or short circuit in the lead wires rather than the sensor itself. Visually inspect the harness for any damage or discoloration along its entire length.
- 04
Corroded or oxidized connector terminals
Wiring / connectionMoisture exposure can cause oxidation on the J101 connector pins or the thermistor terminals, increasing contact resistance enough to produce a false fault reading. Cleaning the contacts and reseating the connector may resolve this without replacing parts.
- 05
Faulty control board thermistor input circuit
Part replacementIn less common cases, the thermistor input circuit on the indoor control board itself can fail, causing false RT errors even when the thermistor and wiring are intact. This is typically diagnosed by confirming the thermistor reads correctly with a multimeter but the fault persists after reconnection.
