The dF code means your refrigerator has entered manual defrost mode. The letter "d" shows in the freezer temperature window and "F" shows in the refrigerator temperature window when this mode is active. It is a built-in service function and is not an error indicating a broken component. In most cases it was triggered accidentally by pressing the FF(+) and FF(-) buttons at the same time.

Unplugging the refrigerator and plugging it back in may or may not clear the manual defrost mode depending on the control board behavior. The reliable and recommended method is to press and hold FF(+) and FF(-) simultaneously for 5 seconds, which directly deactivates the mode through the control system.

In the vast majority of cases, there is no repair cost at all because the dF code is caused by accidental activation of a built-in mode rather than a failed component. If the code is appearing repeatedly without any button input and a control board fault is suspected, control board replacement on a refrigerator typically ranges from $150 to $400 including parts and labor, depending on the model and service provider.

To exit manual defrost mode, press and hold the FF(+) and FF(-) buttons together for 5 seconds. The control panel should return to displaying normal temperature readings after the mode deactivates. The dF code itself is not a safety hazard, but you should not leave the refrigerator in manual defrost mode for an extended period. While the mode is active, the appliance is not actively cooling, and interior temperatures can rise to levels that may affect food safety. Deactivate the mode promptly using the FF(+) and FF(-) button combination.
