The board monitors the sensor signal voltage, which should fall between 1.0V and 4.5V during normal operation. Any reading outside that window triggers this error code.

Without a functioning defrost sensor, the control board cannot properly manage the defrost cycle, which can lead to excessive frost on the evaporator or a defrost heater that does not shut off at the correct time.
