GE Microwave Error Code PROBE

PROBE is a prompt that appears when you select the Temp Cook or Temp Hold function without having the temperature probe connected. The microwave requires the probe to be plugged into the receptacle on the left side of the interior cavity before it can run a temperature-controlled cooking program. It is not a malfunction alert. Connecting the probe will allow the cooking program to proceed.

Resetting the microwave by unplugging it or pressing Cancel will clear the current program, but the PROBE message will return the next time you attempt to use Temp Cook or Temp Hold without the probe connected. The only way to use those modes without seeing the prompt is to connect the temperature probe before starting the program.

Replacement temperature probes for GE microwaves typically cost in the range of $15 to $45 for the part alone, depending on the specific model. If the issue is with the internal probe receptacle rather than the probe itself, repair costs will be higher due to the added labor involved in accessing and replacing the component, generally ranging from $80 to $175 including parts and labor.

Start by inserting the temperature probe into the receptacle located on the left side of the microwave cavity. Make sure the connector is pushed in firmly and fully seated. If the prompt persists, inspect the probe cord and connector for damage, and check the receptacle for any debris or corrosion. A damaged probe will need to be replaced before Temp Cook functions will work.

The PROBE display simply means the temperature-based cooking mode cannot start without the probe connected. The microwave itself is not in an unsafe condition. Standard cooking modes such as timed cook or sensor cook that do not require the probe will still operate normally.
