Error code 16 on a Haier air conditioner indicates an IPDU (Intelligent Power Drive Unit) abnormality specifically tied to compressor damage. The IPDU is the inverter drive board responsible for converting incoming AC power to variable-frequency DC power that controls compressor speed and operation. When the IPDU detects conditions consistent with compressor failure, such as abnormal current draw, locked rotor conditions, or irregular back-EMF signals from the compressor windings, it triggers this fault code to protect the broader electrical system from further damage.

Compressor damage in this context typically refers to internal mechanical failure, winding short circuits, open windings, or a seized rotor. The IPDU continuously monitors compressor feedback during operation, and when the drive signals it sends do not produce expected compressor responses, the unit flags error 16. A grounded compressor winding or shorted phase can also cause excessive current spikes that the IPDU registers as a compressor fault, even if the drive board itself remains functional.

Diagnosing this error requires isolating whether the fault originates in the compressor itself or in the IPDU board that monitors it. Technicians should check compressor winding resistance across all three terminals and verify insulation resistance to ground using a megohmmeter.
