What -F- means on a Kenmore freezer
The -F- indicator on a Kenmore freezer is not an error code in the traditional sense. It is a status notification indicating that Quick Freeze mode is actively running. When Quick Freeze is engaged, the compressor operates continuously rather than cycling on and off at its normal intervals. This sustained compressor operation drives the internal cabinet temperature down as rapidly as possible, which is the intended behavior when loading large quantities of fresh or room-temperature food that would otherwise raise the freezer's ambient temperature significantly.
Quick Freeze mode is designed to protect already-frozen food from partial thaw when new, warmer items are introduced. The compressor bypasses its standard thermostat cycling and runs in a continuous loop until the target rapid-freeze temperature is achieved or the preset time limit expires. The -F- display will remain visible on the control panel throughout this process, which is normal and expected behavior. No fault condition exists while this indicator is showing.
The mode will deactivate automatically after a maximum of 72 hours, at which point the freezer returns to its standard thermostat-controlled operation and the -F- display clears on its own. A technician or user can also cancel the mode manually at any time by pressing the Quick Freeze button on the control panel. If the -F- display persists beyond 72 hours or the compressor shows no sign of cycling down, that would warrant further investigation into the control board or thermostat circuit.

Common causes of -F-
- 01
User-activated Quick Freeze mode
Wiring / connectionThe most common reason for the -F- display is that the Quick Freeze button was intentionally pressed, typically before loading a large amount of fresh groceries or bulk food. This is normal operation and requires no repair.
- 02
Accidental button press
Wiring / connectionThe Quick Freeze button may have been pressed unintentionally during cleaning, loading the freezer, or adjusting other controls. Pressing the button again will deactivate the mode immediately.
- 03
Mode not yet timed out
Wiring / connectionIf Quick Freeze was activated and then forgotten, the freezer will continue displaying -F- and running the compressor continuously until the 72-hour automatic shutoff completes. No action is required unless you want to cancel it early.
- 04
Control board not canceling the mode after 72 hours
Part replacementIf the -F- indicator remains active and the compressor continues running after the 72-hour window has passed, the main control board may not be sending the shutoff signal correctly. This would require control board inspection or replacement.
