The E2 code on an LG dishwasher means the water level sensor inside the steam generator is operating abnormally. The control board is not receiving a valid signal from the sensor, so it stops the cycle to prevent damage to the steam system. The issue can stem from a loose wiring connection, a faulty sensor, or scale buildup on the sensor contacts.

It is not recommended to continue running steam cycles while the E2 error is active. The code indicates the steam generator cannot confirm a proper water level, and operating the steam system without adequate water can cause overheating and damage to internal components. Standard wash cycles without steam may still function, but the root cause should be addressed promptly.

Repair costs vary depending on the cause. If only a wiring connection needs to be reseated, the cost may be limited to a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150. If the water level sensor needs replacement, parts and labor combined generally fall in the $100 to $250 range. A full steam generator assembly replacement would be at the higher end of the repair cost spectrum and could approach or exceed $300 depending on parts and local labor rates.
