SE3 indicates a steam generator error where the steam chamber failed to reach its normal water level during a cycle. The dishwasher monitors the fill level inside the dedicated steam generator, and when water does not rise to the required point within the expected time, the control board triggers this fault and stops the cycle. The most common starting points for diagnosis are the steam generator inlet valve and the water level sensor wiring connection.

The SE3 fault is designed to protect the steam generator by stopping the cycle before the heating element runs dry. You should not attempt to bypass or ignore this error during a steam cycle, as running the heater without adequate water can damage the steam generator. Standard wash cycles that do not use the steam function may still operate, but the underlying issue should be diagnosed and corrected before regular use continues.

A power reset, done by unplugging the dishwasher or turning off its circuit breaker for a few minutes, may temporarily clear the SE3 code and allow a cycle to start. However, if the underlying cause such as a blocked valve or faulty sensor is not corrected, the error will return as soon as the steam generator attempts to fill again. A reset should only be used as part of the diagnostic process, not as a permanent fix.

Some causes of SE3 are DIY-friendly, such as checking that the water supply valve is fully open, inspecting the inlet valve screen for mineral deposits, or reseating a loose sensor connector. However, replacing a faulty inlet valve solenoid, water level sensor, or control board requires comfort with disassembly and basic electrical testing. If you are not confident working with wiring and components inside the dishwasher, a qualified appliance technician is the safer choice.

Repair costs vary depending on the failed component. Cleaning a clogged inlet valve screen or reseating a connector involves no parts cost and only your time. Replacing a steam generator inlet valve or water level sensor typically ranges from around 30 to 100 dollars for parts, plus labor if you hire a technician. A control board replacement is the most expensive scenario, generally ranging from 150 to 350 dollars or more for parts alone.
