The tE code on an LG dishwasher indicates a temperature sensor (thermistor) error. The control board has detected that the thermistor's voltage output is at or above approximately 4.5V or at or below approximately 0.09V, which signals an open or short circuit in the sensor circuit. Alternatively, the error can appear if the water temperature stays at or below 14 degrees Celsius for 30 seconds while the heater is running, suggesting the heater or sensor is not functioning properly.

It is best to avoid running the dishwasher while the tE error is active. If the temperature sensor is not functioning, the dishwasher cannot reliably monitor or control water temperature, which may result in inadequate cleaning or sanitizing. If the heater is also malfunctioning, there is a risk of the appliance cycling incorrectly.

Repair costs vary depending on the cause. Replacing a thermistor is generally one of the more affordable dishwasher repairs, with parts typically ranging from around 15 to 50 dollars depending on the model, plus labor if a technician is used.
