E226 indicates a COND-OUT 1 breakaway fault, meaning the first condenser outlet temperature sensor has lost its connection or become physically dislodged. The system cannot monitor condenser outlet temperature and will fault out to protect itself. The primary diagnostic step is to locate the sensor on the condenser outlet and confirm it is properly seated and connected.

Operating the heat pump while E226 is active is not recommended. The COND-OUT 1 sensor provides temperature data that the controller uses for capacity regulation and protection functions. Running the unit without this feedback could allow the system to operate outside safe temperature limits, potentially causing compressor or refrigerant circuit damage.

If the sensor only needs to be reseated or a connector needs to be reconnected, the cost is typically limited to a diagnostic service call, which can range from $75 to $150 depending on your location. If the sensor or wiring harness requires replacement, parts and labor together generally range from $100 to $300. Costs vary based on the specific model, local labor rates, and parts availability.
