E297 on an LG heat pump indicates a 4-way valve operation error. The 4-way reversing valve controls which direction refrigerant flows through the system, enabling both heating and cooling modes. This code means the control board has detected that the valve is not shifting correctly when the system attempts to change operating modes. The cause can be electrical, mechanical, or related to refrigerant charge level.

Running the unit with an active E297 error is not recommended. If the 4-way valve is stuck in the wrong position, the heat pump will operate inefficiently and may deliver heating when cooling is needed, or vice versa. More importantly, continued operation with a faulty valve can place abnormal stress on the compressor and potentially cause additional component damage. It is best to shut the unit down and have it diagnosed promptly.

A power reset may temporarily clear the E297 code if the fault was caused by a one-time control glitch, but if the 4-way valve, solenoid coil, or wiring has an actual defect, the error will return as soon as the system attempts to switch modes again. Attempting to open the refrigerant circuit without certification is illegal and dangerous.
