E356 indicates a main cooling solenoid valve open error. The control board has detected an open circuit condition in the electrical circuit that operates the solenoid valve responsible for refrigerant routing during cooling. This fault is triggered to protect the system from operating with a malfunctioning valve. The cause is typically a failed valve coil, wiring issue, or less commonly a faulty control board.

It is not recommended to continue operating the unit while E356 is active. A malfunctioning main cooling solenoid valve can cause improper refrigerant routing, reduced system efficiency, and added mechanical stress on the compressor. Continued operation under these conditions risks more extensive and costly damage to the refrigerant circuit.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. A replacement solenoid valve coil or wiring repair is generally a lower-cost fix, while replacing the main control board or a full solenoid valve assembly will cost more.
