E434 indicates an instant power off error, meaning the control board detected an abrupt loss of power to the compressor circuit. The error is transient and will clear on its own once the compressor starts running successfully. It most commonly points to electrical issues such as loose wiring, a failing capacitor, or a worn contactor.

Some causes, such as a loose wiring connection at the disconnect box, can be addressed by a knowledgeable DIYer with the power fully shut off. However, testing and replacing capacitors, contactors, or diagnosing compressor issues involves working with high-voltage components and is best handled by a certified HVAC technician. Incorrect handling of these components is a serious safety risk.

Repair costs depend on the root cause. A capacitor replacement typically ranges from around 80 to 200 dollars including labor, while a contactor replacement may cost between 100 and 250 dollars.
