E3 indicates an evaporator thermistor fault. The control board has detected that the thermistor is open, shorted, disconnected, or producing a resistance reading outside its acceptable range. This sensor is responsible for reporting evaporator temperature, and without a valid signal, the freezer cannot manage its cooling cycle correctly.

A reset may temporarily clear the code, but E3 will return if the underlying fault in the thermistor circuit has not been resolved. The code is generated because the control board is detecting an actual electrical problem, not a software glitch. Resetting without repairing the root cause will not restore normal operation long term.

If the fix is simply reseating a disconnected connector, there is no parts cost involved. If the evaporator thermistor itself has failed, replacement thermistor parts typically range from around 15 to 60 dollars depending on the specific model. Adding professional labor for diagnosis and repair, total service costs generally fall in the range of 100 to 300 dollars.

Some causes of E3 are straightforward for a knowledgeable DIYer to address, such as reseating a loose harness connector at the evaporator or UI board. Checking thermistor resistance with a multimeter is also manageable with basic tools. However, if a pin in the harness connector is broken or the thermistor itself has failed, replacing those components may require more comfort with appliance wiring and diagnosis.

When E3 is active, the freezer may not be maintaining proper temperatures because the control system has lost its evaporator temperature reference. You should check the actual internal temperature with a standalone thermometer before trusting stored food. If the unit is not holding safe freezing temperatures, move frozen goods to another freezer while you diagnose and repair the fault.
