What F46 means on a Miele dryer
F46 is an internal display fault originating within the selection module, also referred to as the EW module, on Miele dryers. The selection module is the control interface board that houses the LCD display, the display driver circuitry, and the user-facing controls. When F46 is triggered, the dryer's control system has detected that the display driver responsible for operating the LCD module has failed or is producing signals outside of acceptable parameters. This is a component-level fault isolated to the selection module itself, not to external wiring or sensors.
The display driver is an integrated circuit on the selection module's PCB that translates control signals into the voltage patterns needed to illuminate and update the LCD. When this driver fails, the LCD may go blank, display corrupted characters, freeze, or become completely unresponsive. Because the fault is internal to the module, individual component repair of the driver IC is generally not a viable field repair option. The failure can result from heat stress on the PCB over time, a voltage spike from a power surge, or simple component fatigue on the driver circuit.
The first and primary diagnostic step is to exchange the selection module. Before replacing the module, it is worth power cycling the dryer by unplugging it for several minutes to rule out a temporary firmware or communication glitch that may have triggered the fault code. However, if F46 returns after a full power cycle, the selection module requires physical replacement. No external wiring harnesses or sensors are implicated in this specific fault code.

Common causes of F46
- 01
Failed display driver IC on the selection module
Part replacementThe integrated circuit responsible for driving the LCD has failed internally. This is the most direct cause of F46 and is why replacement of the entire selection module is the primary recommended action.
- 02
Heat-related PCB degradation
Part replacementProlonged exposure to heat inside the dryer cabinet can stress the selection module's PCB and its soldered components over time, leading to display driver failure. Inspect the module for discoloration or signs of heat damage.
- 03
Power surge damage to the module
Part replacementA voltage spike from a power surge can damage the display driver circuit on the selection module. If the fault appeared after a power event, the module circuitry may have sustained damage.
- 04
Temporary firmware or communication glitch
Wiring / connectionIn rare cases, a transient control system error can produce a false F46 reading. Power cycling the dryer by unplugging it for several minutes may clear the fault if no hardware failure is present.
