This code is specific to Miele's barrier or pass-through washer configurations, where a single machine has two door access points: one on the soiled side (where laundry is loaded) and one on the clean side (where it is retrieved after washing). The 30-second timeout is a built-in safety and operational threshold. If the door mechanism does not confirm a successful open signal within that window, the control system logs F4146 and halts the door operation.

The door opening system on these machines relies on an electromechanical door lock and release assembly, which is triggered by a signal from the main control board when the door button is pressed. If the locking solenoid does not actuate, if the door handle or latch mechanism is mechanically obstructed, or if the control board does not receive a confirmation signal from the door position sensor, the 30-second timer will expire and trigger the fault. Wiring harness faults between the control board and the door lock assembly are also a known contributor.
