What F1 means on a Moffat dryer
The F1 error code on a Moffat dryer indicates a fault in the temperature sensor circuit. Specifically, the control board has detected either an open circuit or a short circuit in the wiring or sensor element responsible for monitoring drum temperature. Because the dryer relies on accurate temperature readings to regulate the heating cycle, a compromised sensor circuit causes the control board to abort the program immediately rather than risk overheating or running without proper thermal regulation.
The temperature sensor is a thermistor-type component whose electrical resistance changes in proportion to temperature. When the control board reads a resistance value that falls outside the expected range, either impossibly high due to an open circuit or near zero due to a short, it interprets this as improper sensor operation and triggers the F1 fault. Common failure points include the sensor element itself, the wiring harness connecting the sensor to the control board, and the connector terminals at either end of that harness.
Diagnosis begins at the physical connection between the temperature sensor and the control board harness. Loose, corroded, or damaged connector pins can introduce enough resistance to simulate an open circuit, or cause intermittent shorts. If the connections check out, the sensor element itself should be tested for correct resistance values across its operating temperature range. A failed sensor that reads open or shorted at room temperature will need to be replaced before the dryer can complete a drying cycle.

Common causes of F1
- 01
Loose or disconnected sensor connector
Wiring / connectionThe wiring harness connector at the temperature sensor or control board may have worked loose, creating an open circuit. Inspect both ends of the connector for proper seating and listen for an audible click when pressing them together.
- 02
Failed temperature sensor
Part replacementThe thermistor element inside the sensor can fail open or short internally, producing an out-of-range resistance reading. A failed sensor will typically read infinite resistance or near zero ohms when tested with a multimeter at room temperature.
- 03
Damaged wiring harness
Part replacementWires running to the temperature sensor can become pinched, chafed, or broken, particularly near harness routing points and sharp cabinet edges. Visually inspect the full length of the sensor wiring for cuts, melted insulation, or broken conductors.
- 04
Corroded or damaged connector terminals
Wiring / connectionMoisture or heat exposure can corrode the terminal pins inside the sensor connector, increasing resistance enough to trigger an open circuit fault. Check terminals for discoloration, pitting, or carbon tracking and clean or replace as needed.
- 05
Faulty control board
Part replacementIf the sensor and all wiring test within spec but the F1 code persists, the control board input circuit for the sensor signal may be defective. This is the least common cause and should only be considered after all other components have been ruled out.
