H36 indicates that the outdoor gas pipe temperature sensor has been detected as open or short circuit continuously for 5 seconds. This sensor monitors refrigerant temperature at the suction pipe on the outdoor unit. When the fault is active, the system restricts itself to heating protection operation only and will not run normally until the sensor fault is resolved.

The unit has already limited itself to a protective mode when H36 is displayed, so it will not operate normally until the fault is cleared. Continuing to attempt operation in this faulted state is not recommended, as the system lacks the sensor data it needs to protect the compressor and manage refrigerant safely. Address the fault as soon as possible to avoid potential further damage.

Repair costs depend on the root cause. If only the sensor connector needs cleaning or reseating, the cost may be limited to a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150. If the temperature sensor itself needs replacement, parts and labor combined often range from $150 to $350. A wiring harness repair or control board replacement would be at the higher end of the cost range. Getting a diagnosis from a qualified technician before committing to parts is always advisable.

Homeowners can safely check that the outdoor unit is powered off and inspect visible wiring for obvious damage, but diagnosing a sensor or connector fault requires accessing internal outdoor unit components and performing resistance measurements. A power reset may temporarily clear the displayed fault code, but if the sensor or wiring fault is still present, the H36 error will return within 5 seconds of the sensor circuit being re-evaluated at startup.
