Error code 11 on a Rheem water heater indicates a problem with the vent termination connection. Specifically, the unit has detected a condition suggesting the vent pipes at the termination point are not properly joined, sealed, or seated. This affects the exhaust and combustion air intake system, which is critical for safe and efficient burner operation. On direct-vent and power-vent models, the vent system is a sealed pathway that must maintain integrity from the unit to the outdoor termination cap.

Improper vent connections at the termination can allow exhaust gases to recirculate back into the combustion air intake, cause pressure imbalances that prevent the burner from firing correctly, or allow outside air infiltration that disrupts the pressure sensing within the venting system. The water heater monitors vent system integrity through pressure switches and flow sensors, and when those readings fall outside expected parameters, the control board logs error code 11 and shuts down the burner to prevent unsafe operation.

Because this error involves the physical vent termination, which is typically located on an exterior wall or rooftop, diagnosis requires a hands-on inspection of the vent pipes, couplings, and termination cap.
