The DRIVE COMM ERROR on a Speed Queen dryer indicates that the output control board attempted to establish communication with the drive motor three times and received no valid response on any of those attempts. The output board and drive motor communicate through a dedicated signal circuit, and this fault is logged as a fatal error when that communication loop fails completely. Because the dryer cannot confirm that the drive motor is operating under controlled conditions, it shuts down and locks out normal operation until the fault is cleared.

The most common underlying causes involve disruptions in the wiring harness or connector between the output board and the drive motor. Loose pins, corroded terminals, a damaged harness section, or a connector that has worked free from vibration can all interrupt the signal path. In some cases the drive motor itself has failed internally, preventing it from responding to board queries. The output board can also be the source of the fault if its communication circuitry is damaged or if a firmware condition has caused it to enter an error state.

Because this is classified as a fatal error, the dryer will not resume operation on its own. Clearing the error requires a deliberate reset: powering down the machine, pressing the designated Clear Fatal Error key sequence on the control panel, or issuing a Clear Fatal Error command through the network interface if the unit is connected to a facility management system. After clearing, technicians should monitor whether the error returns immediately, which would confirm an active hardware fault rather than a transient communication glitch.
