The flashing SERVICE indicator means the electronic control system has detected a fault in a specific monitored component. Reading the accompanying display condition is the first step to narrowing down which component needs attention.

It depends on which fault is active. A water valve fault may not immediately compromise food safety if the refrigerator is still maintaining temperature. A thermistor or evaporator thermistor fault is more serious because the control board relies on those sensors to regulate cooling and defrost cycles, meaning temperatures may become unreliable.
