The SERVICE indicator on a Sub-Zero refrigerator signals that the electronic control system has detected a fault in one of several monitored components. The specific fault depends on what the display shows alongside the flashing SERVICE indicator: a thermistor fault, a water valve fault, or a refrigerator evaporator thermistor fault. Each of these represents a distinct electrical or sensor-level failure that the control board has logged after monitoring readings outside acceptable parameters. To diagnose accurately, technicians must first read the accompanying display condition before proceeding with component testing.

For homeowners, the SERVICE indicator means the refrigerator's built-in monitoring system found a problem with a sensor or valve and is alerting you to it. The thermistors are temperature sensors that tell the control board how cold different parts of the refrigerator are. If a thermistor fails or sends a bad signal, the unit cannot regulate temperatures properly. A water valve fault means the control board detected an issue with the valve that supplies water to the ice maker or dispenser. These are not always catastrophic failures, but they do require attention.
