What SAb means on a Thermador oven
SAb is not a fault or error code in the traditional sense. It is a status indicator that appears on Thermador oven displays to notify the user that Sabbath mode is currently active. Sabbath mode is a programmed operating state designed to comply with religious observance requirements, specifically the restrictions associated with the Jewish Sabbath and certain holidays. When this mode is engaged, the oven maintains a set temperature continuously without requiring user interaction, and the control panel is intentionally limited: most touch pads are disabled to prevent accidental activation or deactivation of functions.
In Sabbath mode, the oven's control board suppresses the majority of its normal input responses. The display shows SAb to confirm this state is running. The oven will continue to heat to its programmed temperature, but features such as timers, broil, convection, and other specialty functions are locked out. This is by design and does not indicate any component failure or wiring issue. The control system is functioning exactly as intended when SAb is displayed.
To exit Sabbath mode and return the oven to normal operation, the user must press the OFF pad on a single oven model, or UPPER OFF or LOWER OFF on a double oven model, depending on which cavity is in Sabbath mode. Once deactivated, all control pad functions are restored and the display returns to its standard standby state. No parts replacement or service intervention is needed in a typical SAb scenario.

Common causes of SAb
- 01
Sabbath mode intentionally activated
Wiring / connectionThe most common reason SAb appears is that a household member deliberately enabled Sabbath mode through the control panel. This is the expected behavior and requires no repair.
- 02
Accidental activation through button sequence
Wiring / connectionOn Thermador ovens, Sabbath mode can sometimes be triggered unintentionally if the correct button combination is pressed during normal use. Reviewing the control panel sequence for enabling and disabling this mode will confirm if this occurred.
- 03
Mode not properly exited after previous use
Wiring / connectionIf Sabbath mode was used previously and the OFF pad was not pressed to fully exit it, the oven may revert to or remain in SAb state. Pressing OFF, UPPER OFF, or LOWER OFF as appropriate will clear it.
- 04
Control board retaining mode state after power interruption
Wiring / connectionIn rare cases, a brief power interruption while Sabbath mode was active may cause the control board to resume the mode when power is restored. Pressing the appropriate OFF pad should resolve this without any part replacement.
