Code 1 on a Viking induction cooktop means the element is not detecting a compatible cooking vessel on the active zone. The cooktop requires ferromagnetic cookware to operate, and without it the element will not activate. This code also appears when the Boost function is selected without a recognized pan present. Pan detection always takes priority over other display states, including residual heat warnings.

Code 1 is not a hazard indicator. It is an operational status code informing you that the element cannot activate because no compatible pan has been detected. The element will not generate heat in this state, so there is no risk of unintended surface heating. However, remember that code 1 overrides the residual heat display, so always use caution when touching the glass surface after cooking.

If the code is caused by incompatible cookware, there is no repair cost, only the potential purchase of new ferromagnetic pans, which typically range from $30 to $200 or more depending on brand and size.
