What F3E7 means on a Whirlpool dryer
The F3E7 error code on a Whirlpool dryer indicates a short circuit condition in the moisture sensor strip. The moisture sensor system uses two metal sensor bars located inside the dryer drum to detect the electrical conductivity of wet fabric passing across them. As clothes tumble and contact these bars, the control board measures the small electrical current that flows between them to determine remaining moisture levels. When the resistance reading drops below acceptable limits due to a short, the control board registers F3E7, signaling that sensor output is outside normal operating range.
This fault code is only accessible during service diagnostic mode and will not appear during a standard drying cycle. This means a homeowner or technician must intentionally enter the diagnostic sequence to retrieve the code. Because it does not surface during normal operation, the failure may go unnoticed until clothes are consistently over-dried or under-dried, which are common symptoms of a malfunctioning moisture sensor circuit.
The most frequent causes include a direct short in the wiring harness connecting the sensor bars to the control board, contamination or buildup on the sensor bars creating an unintended conductive path, or a damaged sensor strip itself. The recommended starting point for diagnosis is the moisture sensor test outlined in TEST #5, which walks through checking the sensor circuit for shorts, verifying wiring integrity, and confirming control board response to sensor input.

Common causes of F3E7
- 01
Shorted moisture sensor strip
Part replacementThe sensor strip or sensor bars inside the drum may have a direct short, either from physical damage or wear over time. This is the primary cause indicated by the F3E7 code and should be inspected first.
- 02
Contaminated sensor bars
Wiring / connectionDryer sheet residue, fabric softener buildup, or lint deposits on the sensor bars can create a conductive bridge between them, mimicking a short circuit. Cleaning the bars with a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol may resolve this.
- 03
Damaged or pinched wiring harness
Part replacementThe wiring connecting the moisture sensor bars to the control board can become pinched, chafed, or melted, causing two conductors to contact each other and create a short. Inspect the harness routing through the dryer cabinet for visible damage.
- 04
Faulty wire connector at the sensor
Wiring / connectionConnectors at the moisture sensor can corrode or become damaged, causing unintended continuity between terminals. Check the connector for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion.
- 05
Defective control board
Part replacementIf the sensor strip and wiring harness both test correctly, the control board's sensor input circuit may have failed internally, causing it to misread a normal sensor as shorted. This is a less common cause but should be considered after all other components are ruled out.
