What 1 Flash means on a York furnace
A 1 Flash error code on a York furnace indicates that the control board has detected a flame signal at the flame sensor when no call for heat is active. Under normal operation, the flame sensor should only register a signal during an active heating cycle. When the board detects ionization current through the flame rod outside of a commanded heating sequence, it interprets this as an unsafe condition and locks out the system to prevent uncontrolled combustion.
The most direct cause of this fault is a gas valve that has failed in the open position or is closing too slowly after a heating cycle ends. If gas continues to flow and ignites, the flame rod will continue to sense flame even though the thermostat is not calling for heat. Beyond the gas valve itself, the fault can also originate in the control wiring. If the gas valve circuit is being energized by an incorrect wiring connection, the valve will open when it should not, producing an unauthorized flame.
Two additional electrical causes must be evaluated: a defective ground connection and a flame rod shorted to ground. A poor or floating ground on the control board can introduce stray voltage that mimics an ionization signal, triggering the false flame detection. Similarly, if the flame rod's lead wire contacts the burner assembly or any grounded metal surface, the board will interpret the resulting current path as an active flame. Diagnosing this code requires systematically checking gas valve operation, wiring integrity, grounding, and the flame rod and its wiring for physical damage or contact with grounded components.

Common causes of 1 Flash
- 01
Gas valve stuck open or slow to close
Part replacementA gas valve that fails to close fully or closes too slowly after a heating cycle allows gas to continue flowing and burning, producing a flame signal with no call for heat active. Check whether the burner stays lit after the thermostat demand ends.
- 02
Incorrect wiring energizing the gas valve
Wiring / connectionIf the gas valve wiring is incorrectly connected, the valve may receive a voltage signal when the control board has not commanded heat. Trace the gas valve wiring back to the control board and verify it matches the wiring diagram for the unit.
- 03
Flame rod shorted to ground
Wiring / connectionIf the flame rod or its lead wire is making contact with the burner assembly or any grounded metal component, the resulting current path registers as an ionization signal on the control board. Inspect the flame rod and wire for physical damage, corrosion, or contact with surrounding metal.
- 04
Defective ground connection
Wiring / connectionA faulty or missing chassis ground can allow stray voltage to appear at the flame rod circuit, causing the control board to falsely detect a flame. Check all ground connections at the control board, burner assembly, and chassis for tightness and continuity.
- 05
Failed control board
Part replacementIf all wiring, grounding, gas valve operation, and the flame rod check out correctly, the control board itself may be misinterpreting sensor input due to an internal component failure. Board replacement is typically a last-resort diagnosis after all other causes are ruled out.
