Bosch Dryer Error Code E:01
Dryer overheating fault due to restricted airflow
Dryer overheating fault due to restricted airflow — lint filter, exhaust duct, or air damper is blocked, or air is leaking past the felt drum seal.
First step from the service manual
Immediately stop dryer by rotating cycle selector knob to Off, open door, remove and clean lint filter, let dryer cool down, then check exhaust duct length and number of elbows.
The complete diagnostic procedure includes additional test steps, resistance specifications, wiring diagram references, and component test points.

What E:01 means on a Bosch dryer
The E:01 error code on a Bosch dryer indicates an overheating fault caused by restricted or compromised airflow through the drying system. The dryer's thermal monitoring system detects that internal temperatures have exceeded safe operating limits, which triggers this fault to protect the heating element, drum, and surrounding components from heat damage. This is a safety-critical fault that requires immediate attention: the cycle selector must be rotated to the Off position right away.
The root cause is almost always an airflow restriction somewhere in the exhaust path. A clogged lint filter is the most frequent culprit, as lint accumulation across the filter mesh can dramatically reduce the volume of air moving through the drum. Beyond the filter, a kinked, crushed, or excessively long exhaust duct, or one with too many elbow bends, increases back-pressure and traps heat inside the dryer. Air dampers or vent termination caps that are stuck closed or obstructed by debris can produce the same result.
A less obvious but equally important cause is a worn or damaged felt drum seal. This seal runs along the front and rear edges of the drum and is designed to keep airflow channeled through the drum interior and out the exhaust path. When the felt seal deteriorates or pulls away from the drum, conditioned air bypasses the drum entirely, reducing effective airflow and causing heat to build up in unintended areas. Diagnosing this requires physically inspecting the drum seals during a cool-down period after the fault has been triggered.

Common causes of E:01
- 01
Clogged lint filter
Wiring / connectionA lint filter heavily coated with lint debris restricts the primary airflow path through the drum. Remove the filter and hold it up to light to check for mesh blockage, and clean it thoroughly before restarting.
- 02
Blocked or restricted exhaust duct
Wiring / connectionA kinked flexible duct, a duct with too many elbow bends, or an excessively long run increases back-pressure and traps heat inside the dryer. Inspect the full duct run from the dryer to the exterior termination point for obstructions, crushing, or improper routing.
- 03
Obstructed air damper or vent termination cap
Wiring / connectionThe exterior vent cap or internal air damper can become stuck closed due to lint buildup or debris, preventing exhaust air from escaping. Check that the exterior vent flap opens freely when the dryer runs.
- 04
Worn or damaged felt drum seal
Part replacementThe felt seal around the drum edges keeps airflow directed through the drum interior. A deteriorated or separated seal allows air to bypass the drum, reducing effective airflow and causing localized overheating. Inspect the front and rear drum edges for gaps, tears, or missing sections of felt.
- 05
Lint accumulation inside the dryer cabinet
Wiring / connectionOver time, lint bypasses the filter and collects inside the cabinet around the blower wheel and heating element area, restricting internal airflow. This typically requires opening the dryer cabinet to inspect and vacuum out accumulated lint.
