What E:6 means on a Bosch dryer
The E:6 error code on a Bosch dryer indicates a fault detected within the drying heater circuit. This circuit encompasses the heating element itself, the associated thermal safety devices (including the Klixon thermal cutout), wiring connections, and the control board's ability to monitor and regulate heating. When the control board cannot confirm proper operation of this circuit, it triggers the E:6 code and halts heating to prevent potential damage or hazard.
The Klixon is a bimetallic thermal cutout device mounted directly on or near the heating element. Its job is to interrupt the circuit if the element reaches an unsafe temperature. If the Klixon has tripped due to an overtemperature event, or has failed in an open position, the heater circuit becomes incomplete and the control board registers the fault. This is the first component to inspect, as it is the most common point of failure in this circuit.
Beyond the Klixon, other causes include a burned-out or shorted heating element, damaged wiring or corroded connectors within the heater circuit, or a control board that is incorrectly reading the circuit state. Restricted airflow from a clogged lint filter or blocked exhaust duct can cause repeated thermal cutout trips, so any airflow restriction should be identified and corrected before replacing components.

Common causes of E:6
- 01
Tripped or failed Klixon thermal cutout
Part replacementThe Klixon is a thermal safety device on the heating element that trips if temperatures get too high. If it has tripped or failed open, the heater circuit is broken and E:6 is triggered. It should be tested for continuity.
- 02
Burned-out or failed heating element
Part replacementThe heating element itself can burn out or develop an open circuit, preventing the dryer from generating heat. Inspect the element visually for damage and test it for continuity.
- 03
Restricted airflow causing repeated overtemperature
Wiring / connectionA clogged lint filter, blocked exhaust duct, or crushed vent hose can cause the heater area to overheat and repeatedly trip thermal safety devices. Clear any obstructions before replacing parts.
- 04
Damaged or corroded wiring and connectors
Wiring / connectionLoose, corroded, or heat-damaged wiring connections in the heater circuit can create an open or intermittent circuit that the control board reads as a fault. Inspect all connectors and wiring leading to the heating assembly.
- 05
Faulty control board
Part replacementIf the heater, Klixon, and all wiring test as functional, the control board may be incorrectly reading or regulating the heater circuit. Control board replacement is typically a last resort after other components are ruled out.
