What 18 means on a Bosch washer
Error code 18 on a Bosch washer indicates that the pumping time has been exceeded during a drain cycle. The control board monitors how long the drain pump runs to evacuate water from the drum. When the pump operates longer than the permitted time without successfully draining the machine, the board logs error 18 and halts the cycle. This protection exists to prevent motor burnout and to alert the user that something is interfering with normal water evacuation.
The most direct cause is a blocked or failed drain pump. Foreign objects such as coins, lint, or debris can lodge in the pump impeller and prevent it from spinning freely, reducing or eliminating flow. A pump that has failed electrically will also trigger this fault. Beyond the pump itself, the pressure sensor system is involved in this error: a faulty pressure sensor or a blocked hose connecting the pressure sensor to the tub can cause the control board to misread water levels, leading it to believe draining is incomplete even when the drum is empty.
The drain hose routing is another common factor. If the standpipe connection is too low, too high, or the hose is kinked or clogged, water cannot exit efficiently and pumping time extends beyond the threshold. The wire harness connecting the pump and pressure sensor to the control board should also be inspected for damaged, corroded, or loose terminals, as an intermittent electrical connection can mimic component failure and trigger this code.

Common causes of 18
- 01
Blocked drain pump
Wiring / connectionDebris such as coins, hair, or small garments can jam the pump impeller and prevent proper water flow. Remove and clean the pump filter and inspect the impeller for obstructions.
- 02
Blocked or kinked drain hose
Wiring / connectionA hose that is kinked, clogged with lint, or installed at an incorrect height will restrict water flow and cause pumping time to exceed the limit. Straighten the hose, check the standpipe height, and clear any blockage.
- 03
Failed drain pump
Part replacementIf the pump impeller is clear but the pump still does not run or produces no flow, the pump motor may have burned out electrically. Check for power at the pump terminals and replace the pump if it is not receiving or responding to voltage.
- 04
Faulty or blocked pressure sensor or hose
Part replacementThe pressure sensor monitors water level and signals the control board when the drum is empty. A clogged sensor hose or a defective sensor can cause the board to incorrectly conclude that water remains in the drum even after a successful drain.
- 05
Damaged wire harness
Wiring / connectionCorroded, broken, or loose wiring connections between the pump, pressure sensor, and control board can cause intermittent or absent signals that trigger this error. Inspect the harness and connectors for visible damage or poor seating.
