What COM means on a Continental washer
The COM error code on a Continental washer indicates a communication failure between the main microprocessor control board and the inverter drive board. When this fault is active, the inverter will display Er8 as a secondary indicator of the same underlying problem. The two boards rely on a dedicated communication cable to exchange control signals, and when that link is disrupted or the required voltage is absent, the washer cannot regulate motor speed or direction and will halt operation.
The microprocessor must supply 5 VDC through the communication cable to establish and maintain the data link with the inverter. The first diagnostic step is to disconnect the communication cable at micro connector position X-14 and use a multimeter set to DC voltage to measure whether the micro is producing that 5 VDC output. If the voltage is absent at X-14, the microprocessor board itself is likely faulty. If 5 VDC is present at the micro side but the COM error persists when reconnected, the fault is either in the cable, the connector pins, or the inverter board's ability to receive and respond to that signal.
Common causes include a damaged or unseated communication cable, corroded or bent connector pins at X-14 or the inverter side, a failed microprocessor control board, or a failed inverter board. Because both boards must be functional for communication to succeed, systematic voltage testing at the cable connectors is essential before condemning either board.

Common causes of COM
- 01
Loose or disconnected communication cable
Wiring / connectionThe cable connecting the microprocessor at connector X-14 to the inverter board can work loose over time from vibration. Inspect both ends of the cable for secure seating and reseat any loose connectors before further testing.
- 02
Damaged communication cable
Part replacementThe cable itself may have broken wires, pinched insulation, or internal opens caused by repeated machine vibration or physical damage during installation. Check the full length of the cable for visible damage and test continuity across each wire.
- 03
Corroded or damaged connector pins
Wiring / connectionPins at connector X-14 on the microprocessor or at the inverter board connector can become corroded, bent, or backed out of the housing, preventing reliable electrical contact. Inspect pins visually and clean or re-tension any that appear compromised.
- 04
Failed microprocessor control board
Part replacementIf the DC voltage measurement at connector X-14 shows less than 5 VDC or no voltage at all with the cable disconnected, the microprocessor board is not producing the signal required for communication and will need replacement.
- 05
Failed inverter board
Part replacementIf 5 VDC is confirmed at the microprocessor side of the cable and the cable and connectors test good, the inverter board may be unable to receive or process the communication signal. The Er8 code on the inverter display supports this as a possible origin point of the fault.
