Daikin Air Conditioner Error Code J3

The J3 code indicates an abnormality in the discharge pipe thermistor circuit. The thermistor, which monitors the temperature of refrigerant leaving the compressor, has either lost its electrical connection or has short-circuited. The control board cannot get a valid temperature reading and shuts down normal operation to protect the system.

It is not recommended to continue operating the unit with a J3 fault active. The discharge thermistor is a protective sensor that helps prevent the compressor from running at dangerously high discharge temperatures. Without a valid reading from this sensor, the system cannot protect the compressor from overheating, which could lead to compressor damage if the unit is forced to run.

If the fix is simply reseating a loose connector, the cost may be limited to a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150. If the thermistor itself needs replacement, parts and labor combined generally fall in the range of $150 to $350, depending on the model and local labor rates. A damaged wiring harness can increase costs depending on the extent of the repair needed.

Some steps are accessible to a knowledgeable DIYer, such as checking whether the thermistor connector is fully seated and inspecting the wiring harness for obvious damage. Measuring thermistor resistance with a multimeter after unplugging it from the PCB is also straightforward. However, if the thermistor or wiring needs replacement, comfort with disassembling the unit and handling electrical components is required, and refrigerant-side work must be performed by a licensed technician.

A power reset may temporarily clear the fault display, but the J3 code will return once the system restarts and the PCB again detects an out-of-range resistance from the thermistor circuit. A reset alone does not address the underlying wiring, connector, or thermistor failure. The root cause must be diagnosed and corrected to permanently resolve the fault.
