Frigidaire Range Error Code F97

The F97 code means the relay board has detected the motor door lock in a state that does not match what the user interface board expects. This is called an MDL invalid state fault. The range stops normal operation to prevent running with an undefined or potentially unsafe door lock position. It most commonly appears in connection with the self-clean cycle.

The range raises the F97 fault specifically because the door lock is in an unverified state, which is a safety concern during high-temperature self-clean operation. It is best to avoid running the self-clean cycle until the fault is resolved. Standard cooking functions may still operate, but you should confirm the door lock is fully disengaged before using the oven and address the fault promptly.

Start by disconnecting power for 30 seconds and reapplying it to rule out a transient error. If the code returns, visually inspect the door lock assembly for a motor that appears stuck or shows signs of burning, and check the wiring harness connected to the lock motor for damaged or loose connections. Test the door lock position switches for proper continuity. If the motor, switches, and wiring all check out, the relay board or user interface board may have an internal fault and may need to be replaced.

A power reset is the recommended first step and will clear the F97 fault if it was caused by a temporary communication glitch between the control boards. Disconnect power to the range for at least 30 seconds, then reapply power. If the code returns immediately or comes back the next time you use the self-clean cycle, a physical component such as the door lock motor or position switch likely needs to be inspected or replaced.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. If only a power reset is needed, there is no cost at all. Replacing a door lock motor assembly typically runs in the range of $80 to $200 for the part, plus labor if a technician is hired. A relay board or user interface board replacement can cost between $150 and $350 for the part. A service call from an appliance technician generally adds $75 to $150 in labor on top of parts costs.
