What F71 means on a GE cooktop
The F71 error code on a GE cooktop indicates a User Interface (UI) key fault. This means the control board has detected an issue with one or more of the touch keys or physical buttons on the cooktop's control panel. The UI board continuously monitors key inputs, and when it detects a key that appears to be stuck, shorted, or sending an invalid signal for an extended period, it triggers the F71 fault to prevent unintended operation.
The most common cause of this fault is contamination on the control panel surface. Spills, grease buildup, or moisture can create a conductive bridge across touch-sensitive pads, causing the controller to interpret this as a continuously pressed key. In touch-based control panels, even a thin film of residue can disrupt the capacitive sensing circuitry. Physical damage to the keypad membrane or wear on individual key contacts can produce the same result.
If cleaning the UI surface and cycling power does not clear the fault, the UI board itself is likely defective. A failed key input circuit on the board, a damaged ribbon cable connection between the keypad and the main control, or a shorted key matrix can all produce a persistent F71 code. In these cases, replacing the UI board is the recommended corrective action, as individual key components are typically not serviceable separately.

Common causes of F71
- 01
Contamination on the Control Panel
Wiring / connectionGrease, liquid spills, or food residue on the touch panel can simulate a stuck or continuously pressed key. Thoroughly cleaning the UI surface with a soft damp cloth and drying it completely is the first step.
- 02
Stuck or Physically Damaged Key
Part replacementA key that is mechanically stuck in the depressed position or has a damaged membrane beneath it will trigger this fault. Inspect each key for visible damage or abnormal resistance when pressed.
- 03
Moisture Intrusion into the UI
Wiring / connectionSteam or liquid that has seeped beneath the control panel surface can cause intermittent short circuits across the key input circuitry. This often occurs near burners or after heavy cleaning with excess water.
- 04
Faulty UI Board
Part replacementIf the fault persists after cleaning and power cycling, the UI board itself may have a failed key input circuit or damaged internal components. Replacement of the UI board is required in this case.
- 05
Loose or Damaged Ribbon Cable Connection
Part replacementThe ribbon cable connecting the keypad to the control board can become loose, corroded, or pinched, resulting in corrupted key signals that trigger the F71 fault.
