What FA7 means on a GE cooktop
The FA7 error code on a GE induction cooktop indicates that the control system is not detecting a valid AC line frequency signal. Induction cooktops rely on the incoming AC power frequency (60 Hz in North America) as a timing reference for the power inverter circuits that drive the induction coils. When the control board cannot detect or lock onto this frequency signal, it cannot properly regulate coil output and will shut down the affected zone or the entire cooktop, displaying FA7 to alert the technician.
The induction tray assembly contains the coil, inverter electronics, and often the circuitry responsible for monitoring line frequency. A failure within this tray can prevent the frequency detection circuit from receiving or processing the signal correctly, even if the incoming AC supply is normal. This means the fault can originate from either an actual power supply problem or an internal component failure on the induction tray itself.
Diagnosis should begin at the power supply. Confirm that line voltage is within the expected range and that the AC frequency is stable at 60 Hz using a multimeter with frequency measurement capability or a clamp meter. If the incoming power checks out correctly, the induction tray is the primary suspect and will require replacement. Loose or corroded wiring connections between the power inlet and the induction tray should also be inspected before condemning the tray assembly.

Common causes of FA7
- 01
Faulty Induction Tray Assembly
Part replacementThe induction tray contains the frequency detection circuitry, and an internal failure on this component is a leading cause of FA7. If incoming line voltage and frequency test correctly, the tray assembly should be replaced.
- 02
Missing or Unstable Line Frequency
Wiring / connectionAn unstable or interrupted AC supply at 60 Hz will trigger FA7 because the cooktop cannot lock onto the frequency reference it requires. Check the outlet and circuit with a multimeter capable of reading AC frequency to rule this out.
- 03
Low or Incorrect Line Voltage
Wiring / connectionIf the line voltage is significantly out of the expected range, the frequency detection circuit may not receive enough signal to function properly. Verify the voltage at the cooktop's power connection before proceeding with component replacement.
- 04
Loose or Corroded Wiring Connections
Wiring / connectionPoor connections between the power inlet and the induction tray can interrupt the frequency signal path. Inspect all connectors and terminals for corrosion, looseness, or heat damage.
- 05
Tripped or Weak Circuit Breaker
Wiring / connectionA circuit breaker that has partially tripped or is failing can deliver inconsistent power, causing the cooktop to lose its frequency reference. Reset the dedicated breaker and monitor for return of the fault.
