What E7 SH means on a GE freezer
The E7 SH error code on a GE freezer indicates that the ambient temperature sensor, also called the ambient thermistor, has been detected as out of its expected operating range or has developed a short circuit condition. The ambient thermistor is a resistive temperature sensing device mounted to monitor the air temperature surrounding the freezer unit. The control board continuously reads the resistance value from this thermistor and cross-references it against a known Thermistor Temperature Ohm Chart to determine the ambient temperature. When the resistance reading falls outside the expected range for any measured temperature, or drops to near zero ohms indicating a short, the control board flags the E7 SH fault.
Thermistor failures typically present in one of two ways: a complete short, where the sensor's internal resistance collapses and the control board reads an implausibly low resistance value, or a drift out of range, where the thermistor's resistance no longer matches the expected value for the actual ambient temperature. Both conditions prevent the control board from accurately interpreting the surrounding environment, which can affect defrost cycle timing, compressor operation, and overall temperature regulation.
Diagnosis begins with disconnecting the ambient thermistor and measuring its resistance with a multimeter, then comparing that reading to the Thermistor Temperature Ohm Chart specific to the unit. If the measured resistance does not correspond to the actual ambient temperature according to the chart, the thermistor has failed and requires replacement. Wiring between the thermistor and the control board should also be inspected for damage, pinching, or corrosion that could create an artificial short or open circuit condition.

Common causes of E7 SH
- 01
Failed ambient thermistor
Part replacementThe thermistor itself has internally shorted or drifted out of its calibrated resistance range. This is confirmed by measuring the thermistor's resistance and comparing it to the Thermistor Temperature Ohm Chart; a mismatch at the known ambient temperature confirms sensor failure.
- 02
Shorted thermistor wiring
Wiring / connectionThe wiring harness connecting the ambient thermistor to the control board may have chafed against a sharp edge or been pinched, creating a short circuit. Visually inspect the wire routing and use a multimeter to check for continuity between individual wires and ground.
- 03
Corroded or loose thermistor connector
Wiring / connectionMoisture or oxidation at the thermistor connector pins can cause erratic resistance readings that fall outside the acceptable range. Inspect the connector for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or terminals that are not fully seated.
- 04
Open circuit in thermistor wiring
Wiring / connectionA broken wire between the thermistor and the control board can cause the resistance reading to spike beyond the acceptable range, triggering the out-of-range fault. Continuity testing along the full length of the wiring will identify a break.
- 05
Faulty control board
Part replacementIf the thermistor and all associated wiring test within spec, the control board's sensor input circuit may have failed and is misreading the thermistor signal. This is the least likely cause and should only be considered after all other components have been ruled out.
