GE Oven Error Code F61

F61 on a GE oven means the control board has lost communication with the Upper Temperature Encoder. This encoder is responsible for transmitting temperature set-point information to the control board. The error can be triggered by a loose wiring harness, a damaged connector, a failed encoder, or a faulty control board.

It is generally not recommended to continue using the oven while F61 is active. A communication loss with the temperature encoder means the oven may not regulate temperature correctly, which could result in undercooked food or uncontrolled heating. Power off the oven and have it diagnosed before resuming use.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. If only a wiring harness needs reseating or a connector needs repair, costs may be minimal, mainly covering a service call in the range of $75 to $150. If the control board needs replacement, parts and labor combined typically run in the range of $200 to $450 depending on the model. An encoder replacement is generally less expensive than a control board replacement.

A reset by cycling the breaker or unplugging the oven may temporarily clear the F61 code, but the error will return if the underlying cause is not fixed. If the wiring connection was only slightly loose, reseating connectors during inspection may resolve it permanently. A failed board or encoder will continue to trigger F61 until the faulty component is replaced.
