What E014 means on a GE range
E014 on a GE range signals a loss of communication along one or more flat ribbon connections, called tails, that link the ESEC-UIB (User Interface Board) to other control components. The error covers three distinct sub-conditions: loss of Display Tail #0, loss of Display Tail #1, or loss of the Keyboard Tail. Each tail is a thin flexible cable that carries data and power signals between the UIB and the ESEC Rotary HI Board. When the control cannot detect a valid signal along any of these paths, it throws E014 to alert the technician that the communication link has been interrupted.
The physical connections involved are specific and worth noting precisely. Display Tail #0 runs between connector P1 on the ESEC-UIB and connector P1 on the ESEC Rotary HI Board. Display Tail #1 connects P2 on the ESEC-UIB to P2 on the ESEC Rotary HI Board. The Keyboard Tail connects J2 on the ESEC-UIB to J8. Any of these three paths, if unseated, damaged, or corroded, will trigger the E014 fault code. Because each sub-condition points to a specific connector pair, the error can often be isolated quickly by inspecting the appropriate connection.
Common causes include connectors that have worked loose from vibration, ribbon cables that have developed a crease or tear, and corrosion on connector pins from moisture exposure. In some cases the ESEC-UIB itself or the ESEC Rotary HI Board has failed internally, preventing signal transmission even when the physical cable appears intact. Reseating the connectors is always the correct first step before replacing any hardware.

Common causes of E014
- 01
Loose or unseated ribbon cable connector
Wiring / connectionVibration from normal use can cause the flat ribbon connectors at P1, P2, or J2 on the ESEC-UIB to partially unseat. Inspect each connector pair and firmly reseat any that show even slight looseness.
- 02
Damaged or creased ribbon cable
Part replacementThe flexible tail cables can develop cracks, tears, or sharp creases that break the internal conductors while the cable still appears connected. Flex each cable gently and look for visible damage along the length of the ribbon.
- 03
Corroded connector pins
Wiring / connectionMoisture or grease vapor can cause oxidation on the connector pins at P1, P2, J2, or J8, raising contact resistance and interrupting the signal. Look for discoloration or buildup on the metal contacts and clean carefully if found.
- 04
Failed ESEC Rotary HI Board
Part replacementIf the cables and connectors check out physically, the ESEC Rotary HI Board itself may have failed, preventing it from sending or receiving signals through the display tail connections at P1 or P2.
- 05
Failed ESEC-UIB (User Interface Board)
Part replacementInternal failure of the ESEC-UIB can cause it to stop recognizing any tail connection, triggering E014 even when all cables are properly seated and undamaged. This is typically diagnosed after all cables and the Rotary HI Board have been ruled out.
