What F154 means on a GE range
The F154 error code on a GE range indicates that the power board has reached an excessively high internal temperature. The power board, sometimes referred to as the main control board or power supply board, manages the distribution of electrical power to the range's various components including the heating elements, control interface, and safety circuits. When an onboard thermal sensor detects that the board's operating temperature has exceeded a safe threshold, the control system triggers the F154 fault to alert the user and protect the electronics from heat damage.
Overheating of the power board can result from several conditions. Blocked or restricted airflow around the control electronics is a frequent contributor, as the board relies on adequate ventilation to dissipate heat generated during normal operation. A failing cooling fan, if the unit is equipped with one, can also allow heat to accumulate rapidly. In some cases, a component on the board itself may be failing and drawing excess current, generating heat internally rather than from an external source.
Because this fault involves elevated temperatures in a high-voltage component, it should not be ignored or repeatedly reset without addressing the root cause. Prolonged operation with an overheating power board can lead to permanent board failure, damage to connected components, or in severe cases, a fire risk. Technicians should inspect ventilation pathways, check for obstructions near the control cavity, and evaluate the board for signs of scorching, burnt components, or a failed thermal protection device before attempting a reset.

Common causes of F154
- 01
Blocked airflow or ventilation obstruction
Wiring / connectionIf the vents or cavities around the control electronics are blocked by debris, grease buildup, or improper installation clearances, heat cannot escape and the power board overheats. Inspect the area around the control board housing for any obstructions.
- 02
Failed or malfunctioning cooling fan
Part replacementSome GE range models use a cooling fan to regulate temperature around the control electronics. If this fan has seized, lost a blade, or failed electrically, heat accumulates quickly and triggers the F154 fault.
- 03
Failing power board with internal component failure
Part replacementA component on the power board itself, such as a capacitor, relay, or voltage regulator, may be failing and drawing excess current, generating heat from within the board. Signs include visible scorching, swollen capacitors, or a burnt smell near the control area.
- 04
High ambient temperature around the range
Wiring / connectionIf the range is installed in a location with very high ambient temperatures or in a kitchen with poor ventilation, the surrounding heat can push the power board past its thermal limit. Check installation clearances against the range specifications.
- 05
Faulty thermal sensor on the power board
Part replacementIf the temperature sensor on the power board is reading incorrectly, it may report overheating conditions even when the board is at a normal operating temperature. This is less common but should be considered if no other cause is found.
