What F2 E1 means on a GE range
The F2 E1 error code on a GE range indicates that the control board has lost communication with the keypad, or the keypad has become physically disconnected from the electronic control system. The keypad assembly connects to the main control board via a ribbon cable or wire harness, and the control board continuously monitors this connection. When the signal from the keypad drops out or cannot be detected, the board flags the F2 E1 fault and typically disables range operation to prevent unsafe or unintended commands from being processed.
The most common trigger for this fault is a loose or unseated connector between the keypad and the control board. Vibration during normal use, movement of the appliance, or simply an improperly seated connector from a previous service can cause the harness to work loose over time. In some cases, the ribbon cable or wire harness itself may be damaged, with broken conductors or worn insulation causing an intermittent or complete loss of signal.
If reseating the connection does not resolve the fault, the keypad membrane itself may have failed internally. The membrane contains a grid of conductive traces that can crack, delaminate, or corrode, breaking the circuit even when the connector appears secure. A failed control board is a less common but possible cause, particularly if the board shows signs of heat damage or if other board-related faults are also present. Diagnosing the fault requires isolating whether the break in communication originates at the connector, the keypad, or the board.

Common causes of F2 E1
- 01
Loose or unseated keypad connector
Wiring / connectionThe wire harness or ribbon cable connecting the keypad to the control board has worked loose. Unplugging the range, locating the connector, and firmly pressing it back into its socket often resolves the fault immediately.
- 02
Damaged wire harness or ribbon cable
Part replacementThe cable between the keypad and control board may have a broken conductor, pinched section, or worn insulation causing an intermittent or permanent loss of signal. Inspect the full length of the harness for visible damage.
- 03
Failed keypad membrane
Part replacementThe conductive traces inside the keypad membrane can crack, delaminate, or corrode over time, breaking the internal circuit even if the connector is seated properly. A failed membrane requires replacement of the keypad assembly.
- 04
Faulty main control board
Part replacementIf the connector and keypad test correctly, the control board itself may have failed and is no longer able to detect or process the keypad signal. Look for signs of heat damage, burnt components, or corrosion on the board.
