What F2E2 means on a GE range
The F2E2 error code on a GE range indicates that the control board has detected a failure in the cancel key loop test. This is a self-diagnostic function where the electronic oven control (EOC) continuously monitors the keypad matrix for proper continuity and signal integrity. The cancel key occupies a specific position within the keypad circuit loop, and when the control board sends a test signal through that loop and does not receive the expected response, it flags F2E2 and halts normal operation to prevent unsafe or unpredictable behavior.
The most common root cause is a failure within the keypad switch assembly itself. Over time, the membrane keypad can develop internal short circuits, broken traces, or contact degradation directly at the cancel key position. Moisture intrusion, physical wear from repeated pressing, and heat exposure from the oven cavity can all accelerate this type of failure. Because the cancel key is one of the most frequently used keys on the control panel, it is particularly vulnerable to premature wear.
In some cases, the ribbon cable connecting the keypad to the control board may be damaged or seated improperly, causing an intermittent or open circuit that mimics a keypad failure. However, since the diagnostic step points directly to the keypad switch assembly as the primary replacement target, that component should be evaluated and replaced before suspecting the control board itself.

Common causes of F2E2
- 01
Failed keypad switch assembly
Part replacementThe membrane keypad develops internal trace breaks, short circuits, or contact wear at the cancel key position. This is the most likely cause and the primary component to replace when F2E2 appears.
- 02
Damaged or improperly seated ribbon cable
Wiring / connectionThe ribbon cable connecting the keypad to the electronic oven control can become kinked, torn, or partially unseated, disrupting the cancel key loop signal. Inspect the ribbon cable connection at both ends before ordering parts.
- 03
Moisture or contamination in the keypad
Part replacementSpills or steam intrusion beneath the control panel surface can cause short circuits or corrosion within the keypad membrane, triggering a false loop test failure. Look for discoloration or residue around the cancel key area.
- 04
Electronic oven control board failure
Part replacementIf the keypad assembly and ribbon cable have been inspected and confirmed good, the control board itself may have failed and is no longer correctly running or interpreting the cancel key loop test. This is a less common cause but should be considered after other components are ruled out.
