What F2x (door lock) means on a GE range

The F2x door lock error code on a GE range indicates that the Door Lock or Lock Home signal became untrue during a self-clean cycle. This means the control board received confirmation that the door was locked at the start of the clean cycle, but then lost that confirmation signal before the cycle completed. The door lock system uses a motorized cam mechanism with an associated switch to verify latch position. When the cam rotates to the locked position, a switch closes to send the Lock Home signal to the control board. If that signal drops out mid-cycle, the control registers the fault.

The range control module (RPSM) monitors the lock signal through connector J16. When an F2x fault is triggered, the control will attempt to recover by opening and closing the relay multiple times in an effort to jog the lock motor back into position. This cycling behavior is by design and does not indicate a separate electrical fault. If the motor cam switch is loose or intermittently failing, these jog attempts may or may not restore the signal. A wiring harness issue between the lock motor assembly and the RPSM J16 connector, such as a broken wire or loose terminal, can also cause the signal to drop.

An additional cause is a tripped Fuse Auto Disconnect (FAD), which is a thermal safety device tied to the cooling fan circuit. If the cooling fan fails during the high-heat clean cycle, the FAD can trip to protect internal components. When the FAD trips, it disrupts power or signal continuity in a way that causes the lock feedback to read as untrue. Checking the cooling fan for proper operation and verifying the FAD has not tripped should be part of any complete diagnostic for this code.

Common causes of F2x (door lock)

  1. 01

Faulty or loose lock motor cam switch

    Part replacement

The cam switch on the door lock motor assembly is responsible for sending the Lock Home signal to the control board. If the switch is worn, misaligned, or has a loose connection, it can send an intermittent signal that drops out during the clean cycle.

  2. 02

Open wiring harness between lock motor and RPSM J16

    Wiring / connection

A broken wire, corroded terminal, or unseated connector in the harness running from the lock motor to the RPSM J16 connector will interrupt the lock feedback signal. Inspect the full length of this harness and check terminal seating at both ends.

  3. 03

Tripped FAD due to cooling fan failure

    Part replacement

The Fuse Auto Disconnect (FAD) is a thermal safety device that can trip if the cooling fan stops working during the high-temperature clean cycle. Check that the cooling fan spins freely and operates when the oven is running.

  4. 04

    Failed door lock motor

    Part replacement

If the lock motor itself is failing, it may not hold the cam in the locked position consistently under the heat stress of a clean cycle, causing the cam switch to lose contact. The motor should be tested for proper resistance and operation.

Frequently asked questions about F2x (door lock)

What does F2x (door lock) mean on a GE range?
The F2x door lock code means the oven's control board lost the Lock Home signal from the door lock assembly during a self-clean cycle. The control confirmed the door was locked when the cycle started, but the lock position signal became untrue before the cycle finished. This causes the oven to halt the clean cycle as a safety precaution. The door lock motor cam switch, the wiring harness to the control board, or a tripped cooling fan safety device are the most common sources of this fault.
Can I fix the F2x door lock error myself on a GE range?
Some causes of this error are DIY-accessible, such as inspecting and reseating the wiring harness connector at the RPSM J16 port or checking that the cooling fan is not blocked. Replacing the door lock motor cam switch or the lock motor assembly is also within reach for someone comfortable working with appliance wiring. However, if you are unsure about working around high-voltage components, having a qualified technician perform the diagnosis is the safer option.
Is it safe to use my GE range when the F2x door lock error is showing?
You should not attempt to run another self-clean cycle until the fault is diagnosed and repaired, as the door lock system is a critical safety interlock for that function. Normal baking and cooking modes do not require the door to be locked, so using the range for regular cooking may be possible, but confirm the door closes and latches securely before doing so. If the door appears to still be in the locked position, do not force it open.
How much does it cost to repair a GE range F2x door lock error?
Repair costs depend on the specific failed component. A door lock motor and switch assembly typically costs between $50 and $130 for the part alone. If professional labor is needed, expect an additional $100 to $200 depending on your location and service provider. Wiring harness repairs or connector replacements are generally on the lower end of the cost range.
Will resetting my GE range clear the F2x door lock error?
Disconnecting the range from power for a few minutes will clear the error code from the display, but it will not fix the underlying problem. If the fault condition, such as a faulty cam switch or open wiring, is still present, the F2x code will return the next time a self-clean cycle is attempted. A reset can be useful for confirming whether the issue was intermittent, but a full diagnosis of the lock motor, harness, and cooling fan should be completed before relying on the oven again.
