What F71 means on a GE range

The F71 error code on a GE range indicates a LIN communication failure between the main control board and one or more slave devices on the LIN (Local Interconnect Network) bus. The most commonly implicated slave device is the RPSM (Remote Power Supply Module) board. LIN is a single-wire serial communication protocol used to coordinate signals between the primary control board and secondary modules. When the main board cannot establish or maintain communication with these slave nodes, it triggers F71 to alert the technician to a network fault.

The failure can originate from a few distinct points in the circuit. The LIN wire itself, which runs through the main wiring harness, is the first suspect. A damaged, pinched, shorted, or open wire in this harness will interrupt the single-wire data path entirely, preventing any slave device from responding. Corrosion at connector terminals or a loose connector pin can also cause intermittent or complete communication loss without any visible damage to the wire itself.

If the LIN wire and its connectors check out as intact and properly seated, the RPSM board itself is likely the source of the fault. A failed RPSM board will not respond to polling from the main control board, producing the same F71 error. In less common cases, the main control board may be the originating fault if it is unable to generate the LIN signal correctly, though this is typically ruled out after the harness and RPSM have been inspected and replaced as needed.

Common causes of F71

  1. 01

Damaged or faulty LIN wire in harness

    Wiring / connection

The single-wire LIN data line runs through the main wiring harness and is vulnerable to pinching, abrasion, or heat damage. Inspect the full length of the harness for visible damage, and check connector terminals for corrosion or loose pins.

  2. 02

    Failed RPSM board

    Part replacement

The Remote Power Supply Module (RPSM) is the primary slave device on the LIN bus. If the board has failed internally, it will not respond to the main control board, triggering F71. Replacing the RPSM is the next step after the harness is confirmed good.

  3. 03

Loose or corroded connector at RPSM or main board

    Wiring / connection

A connector that is not fully seated or has corroded terminals can interrupt the LIN signal even if the wire itself is undamaged. Check all connectors associated with the LIN circuit for proper engagement and clean terminal contact.

  4. 04

    Failed main control board

    Part replacement

If the main control board cannot generate or transmit the LIN signal, it will report a communication fault even if all slave devices are functional. This is typically considered after the harness and RPSM have been ruled out.

Frequently asked questions about F71

What does F71 mean on a GE range?
F71 on a GE range indicates a LIN communication error between the main control board and one or more slave modules, most commonly the RPSM (Remote Power Supply Module) board. LIN is a single-wire serial data network used internally by the range to coordinate control functions. The error means the main board sent a signal on that network and did not receive a valid response. Diagnosis focuses on the LIN wire in the harness and the RPSM board.
Can I fix an F71 error on my GE range myself?
A knowledgeable DIYer can inspect the wiring harness for visible damage and check that all connectors are fully seated, which requires no parts and no specialized tools beyond a flashlight and basic hand tools. If the wire checks out, replacing the RPSM board is the next step and is within reach for someone comfortable working with appliance electronics after disconnecting power. However, if the main control board turns out to be at fault, the repair becomes more involved and may warrant a professional technician.
Will resetting the range clear the F71 error code?
A power reset, such as unplugging the range or tripping its circuit breaker for a minute, may temporarily clear the F71 code. However, if the underlying cause is a damaged LIN wire, a bad connector, or a failed RPSM board, the error will return once the range powers back up and attempts communication again. A reset is useful for confirming whether the fault is persistent, but it is not a repair.
Is it safe to use my GE range while the F71 code is active?
A LIN communication fault can affect the operation of the modules connected to that network, which may mean certain functions of the range operate incorrectly or not at all. Using the range in this state is not recommended until the fault is diagnosed and resolved. Continuing to operate it without addressing the error could mask additional problems or result in unexpected behavior from affected components.
How much does it cost to repair an F71 error on a GE range?
If the fix is a damaged LIN wire or a loose connector, the repair cost may be limited to a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150 depending on your area. Replacing the RPSM board adds the cost of the part, which generally falls in the range of $100 to $250 for this type of module, plus labor. If the main control board is at fault, total repair costs can range from $250 to $450 or more including parts and labor.
