What FA means on a GE range
The FA error code on a GE range indicates a LIN communication fault between the main control board and the RPSM AUX (auxiliary) board. LIN, which stands for Local Interconnect Network, is a low-speed serial communication protocol used to allow control boards to exchange data signals. When the main board cannot establish or maintain a valid communication link with the AUX board, the FA code is triggered. This error only applies to ranges equipped with the RPSM AUX board configuration.
The AUX board typically handles supplementary relay or sensor functions that support the main control board. A breakdown in LIN communication can stem from a failed AUX board, a wiring harness issue between the two boards, or in rarer cases, a degraded main board that is unable to initiate or sustain the communication signal. Because the FA code is specifically a communication error, physical damage to the connector pins, loose harness connections, or a short in the LIN data line can all produce this fault.
The primary diagnostic guidance is to replace the AUX board, particularly when the main board relays are still functioning normally. Functioning main board relays suggest the main board itself is operational and that the fault is isolated to the AUX board or the communication path to it. Technicians should inspect the wiring harness and connectors between both boards before condemning either component, as intermittent connection issues can mimic a failed AUX board.

Common causes of FA
- 01
Failed AUX Board
Part replacementThe RPSM AUX board itself has failed and can no longer send or receive LIN communication signals. This is the most likely cause, especially when the main board relays are confirmed to be operating normally.
- 02
Loose or Damaged Wiring Harness
Wiring / connectionThe harness connecting the main board to the AUX board may have a loose connector, broken wire, or damaged pin that interrupts the LIN data line. Inspect all connectors between the two boards for corrosion, looseness, or visible damage.
- 03
Short in the LIN Communication Line
Wiring / connectionA short circuit in the LIN data wire between the main board and AUX board can prevent communication from being established. Check the wiring for chafing, pinching, or contact with metal surfaces.
- 04
Failed Main Control Board
Part replacementIn less common cases, the main board may be unable to initiate the LIN communication signal even though its relays still function. If replacing the AUX board and verifying the wiring does not resolve the FA code, the main board should be evaluated.
