What FA8x means on a GE range
The FA8x error code on a GE induction range indicates a communication failure between the cooktop filter board and one or more of the other cooktop control boards within the induction module assembly. Induction cooktops use a network of boards including a main filter board and individual zone control boards that must continuously exchange data signals to coordinate power delivery, element switching, and safety monitoring. When this communication link breaks down or produces out-of-spec signals, the system logs FA8x and typically disables cooktop operation to prevent uncontrolled power states.
The most likely source of this fault is a problem within the signal harness that interconnects the cooktop module boards. Connectors can work loose due to vibration, heat cycling, or improper reassembly after a prior repair. Wire insulation can chafe against metal edges inside the cooktop cavity, causing intermittent shorts or open circuits. Corrosion at connector pins is another common contributor, particularly in environments with high humidity or grease exposure near the cooktop area.
If harness inspection does not reveal an obvious defect, the filter board itself is the next suspect. The filter board acts as the communication hub for the cooktop board network, and an internal component failure on that board will disrupt signal transmission to all downstream zone boards. Replacing the filter board is the recommended corrective action when harness checks are normal and the fault persists.

Common causes of FA8x
- 01
Loose or disconnected signal harness connector
Wiring / connectionThe ribbon or wire harness connecting the filter board to the zone control boards inside the cooktop module can work loose over time. Inspect all connectors in the cooktop module for firm seating and signs of backing out.
- 02
Damaged signal harness wiring
Part replacementWires in the cooktop module harness can chafe against metal edges or heat sources, causing shorts or open circuits that break the communication signal. Look for pinched, burnt, or abraded sections along the harness routing.
- 03
Corroded or oxidized connector pins
Wiring / connectionGrease vapor and humidity can cause connector pins on the signal harness to oxidize, increasing resistance and degrading the communication signal. Check pin surfaces for discoloration or buildup and clean or replace connectors as needed.
- 04
Failed filter board
Part replacementAn internal failure of the cooktop filter board will prevent it from sending or receiving communication signals to the other cooktop boards. If harness checks are normal and the fault persists, the filter board should be replaced.
- 05
Faulty zone control board
Part replacementIn some cases a failed zone control board rather than the filter board is dropping the communication link, which the system still reports as an FA8x fault. If replacing the filter board does not resolve the error, the individual zone boards should be evaluated.
