What LOC On means on a GE range

The LOC On indicator on a GE range signals that the Control Lockout feature has been intentionally activated. When this mode is engaged, all touch pads on the control panel and all cooktop surface controls are completely disabled. No inputs will be recognized by the appliance until the lockout is deactivated. This is a software-level lock implemented in the control board firmware, not a fault or failure condition.

The Control Lockout function exists to prevent unintended operation of the range, particularly useful in households with small children or when the cooktop surface needs to be cleaned without accidentally activating burners or oven functions. Because every control input is suppressed while LOC On is active, the display will show this indicator rather than responding to touch commands.

To clear the LOC On condition, locate the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad on the range's touch panel and press and hold it for approximately 3 seconds. The control should acknowledge the input with a beep or indicator change, and normal operation will resume immediately. If the pad does not respond after several attempts, the control panel itself may warrant further inspection.

Common causes of LOC On

  1. 01

    User accidentally activated Control Lockout

    Wiring / connection

The most frequent cause is an unintentional press-and-hold of the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad, which can happen during cleaning or when items are placed on the control panel. No parts are needed; simply hold the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad for 3 seconds to restore function.

  2. 02

    Child activated the lockout feature

    Wiring / connection

Children pressing control panel buttons can trigger a sustained hold on the lockout pad long enough to engage the feature. The resolution is the same: press and hold the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad for 3 seconds.

  3. 03

    Cleaning contact engaged the lockout

    Wiring / connection

Wiping the control panel with a cloth can apply sustained pressure to the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad and enable the feature without the user realizing it. This is entirely normal behavior and does not indicate a fault.

  4. 04

    Unresponsive or stuck touch pad

    Wiring / connection

If the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad is physically stuck or has debris beneath it causing a continuous signal, the lockout may re-engage shortly after being cleared. Inspect the pad surface for residue or damage, and clean thoroughly before testing again.

  5. 05

Control board retaining lockout state after power interruption

    Part replacement

In some cases, the control board may retain the lockout state in memory through a power cycle. If clearing the lockout via the pad and then cutting power briefly does not resolve persistent re-engagement, the control board may require service or replacement.

Frequently asked questions about LOC On

What does LOC On mean on a GE range?
LOC On means the Control Lockout feature is active on your GE range. When this is displayed, all touch pad controls and cooktop controls are disabled and will not respond to input. This is a built-in feature, not an error or malfunction. It can be cleared by pressing and holding the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad for 3 seconds.
How do I fix or turn off LOC On on my GE range?
Locate the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad on your range's control panel and press and hold it for approximately 3 seconds. The control should signal that the lockout has been released, and all controls will return to normal operation. If the display still shows LOC On after this step, release the pad completely and try again with a firm, sustained press.
Is LOC On on a GE range a safety issue?
LOC On is not a safety hazard. It is a deliberate safety feature designed to prevent unintended activation of the burners and oven controls. The range will not heat or operate while the lockout is active, so there is no risk of accidental cooking. Simply unlock the controls when you are ready to use the appliance.
Will resetting my GE range clear the LOC On message?
A power reset by switching off the circuit breaker may clear the LOC On condition in some situations, but the proper way to deactivate it is by pressing and holding the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad for 3 seconds. If the lockout re-engages after being cleared, check the pad for debris or sticking and inspect whether a physical issue with the control panel is causing repeated activation.
How much does it cost to repair a GE range that keeps showing LOC On?
In most cases, there is no repair cost because LOC On is resolved by holding the CONTROL LOCKOUT pad for 3 seconds with no parts required. If the control panel touch pad is malfunctioning and causing the lockout to re-engage repeatedly, a replacement touch pad or control board could range from roughly 100 to 350 dollars or more depending on the specific model and labor rates in your area.
