What F4E6 means on a Jenn-Air microwave
The F4E6 error code on a Jenn-Air microwave indicates a failure in the wave-guide heat sensor, also called the wave-guide thermistor. This thermistor is mounted at or near the wave guide, which is the channel that directs microwave energy from the magnetron into the cooking cavity. The thermistor monitors temperature in this area to detect overheating conditions that could damage internal components or create a fire hazard. When the control board receives a signal from this thermistor that falls outside the expected resistance range, it registers the F4E6 fault and typically disables microwave operation.
The most common causes of this fault are a failed thermistor, a wiring harness problem between the thermistor and the control board, or a genuine overheating event that has permanently damaged the sensor. Thermistors change resistance in response to temperature, so an open circuit, a short, or a drifted resistance reading will all trigger this code. Physical damage to the wave-guide cover, excessive food splatter buildup, or arc events inside the cavity can expose the thermistor to extreme heat, accelerating its failure.
The recommended first step is to disconnect power to the microwave before performing any inspection or repair. Once the unit is de-energized, the wave-guide thermistor should be replaced. Before installing a new thermistor, it is worth inspecting the wave-guide cover and the surrounding wiring harness for signs of burning, arcing, or melted insulation, as these conditions can cause repeat failures if not addressed at the same time.

Common causes of F4E6
- 01
Failed wave-guide thermistor
Part replacementThe thermistor itself has failed electrically, either opening the circuit or shifting out of its normal resistance range. This is the most likely cause and replacement is the primary recommended repair.
- 02
Damaged or burnt wiring harness
Part replacementWiring connecting the thermistor to the control board can melt, arc, or corrode, producing a false signal. Inspect the harness and connector terminals for discoloration, melting, or corrosion.
- 03
Overheating from food debris or wave-guide cover damage
Part replacementHeavy food splatter or a cracked wave-guide cover can cause arcing and extreme localized heat, damaging the thermistor. Check the wave-guide cover for burn marks, cracks, or heavy soiling before replacing the sensor.
- 04
Poor thermistor connector seating
Wiring / connectionThe thermistor connector may have loosened due to vibration or heat cycling, creating an intermittent or open signal. Reseating the connector firmly can resolve the fault if the thermistor itself is undamaged.
- 05
Control board fault misreading the sensor
Part replacementIn less common cases, the control board may incorrectly interpret thermistor readings and trigger a false F4E6 code even when the thermistor is within spec. This is typically diagnosed after confirming the thermistor and wiring are both good.
