Kenmore Dryer Error Code E68
Key (button) is stuck closed (active).
Key (button) is stuck closed (active).
First step from the service manual
Enter function test mode (pg 8) and perform key (button) test to determine which button is at fault. Carefully free button and perform test again. If button is free but key stuck code still exists, replace electronic control.

What E68 means on a Kenmore dryer
The E68 error code on a Kenmore dryer indicates that one or more buttons on the control panel is detected as stuck in the closed, or active, position. The dryer's electronic control board continuously monitors the state of each input button. When a button remains in the closed circuit state longer than the control expects without being intentionally pressed, it flags the E68 fault. This prevents the control from accepting normal user input and can stop the dryer from operating properly.
The most common cause of E68 is a physically stuck or jammed button. Detergent residue, lint buildup, a damaged button cap, or a warped control panel fascia can all prevent a button from returning to its resting, open position after being pressed. In some cases, liquid spilled onto the control panel can cause a button to seize in place or create a conductive path that mimics a closed button signal even when the button appears normal.
If the physical button is freed and the error persists, the fault lies within the electronic control board itself. An internal failure on the board, such as a shorted input circuit or failed key matrix component, can continuously report a button as active regardless of the actual button state. Diagnosis requires entering function test mode and running the key test procedure to identify exactly which button is generating the fault, then determining whether freeing the button resolves it or whether the control board requires replacement.

Common causes of E68
- 01
Physically stuck button
Wiring / connectionLint, debris, or residue buildup around a button can prevent it from springing back to its released position. Visually inspect each button and carefully work it free if it feels stiff or does not click normally.
- 02
Liquid or residue intrusion
Wiring / connectionSpilled liquid or detergent on the control panel can seep beneath button caps and cause them to stick or create a false closed-circuit signal. Check for any discoloration, stickiness, or residue around the buttons.
- 03
Damaged or warped button cap
Part replacementA cracked, broken, or deformed button cap can cause the button mechanism to bind and remain depressed. Inspect each button cap for visible physical damage.
- 04
Failed electronic control board
Part replacementIf all buttons move freely and the E68 fault remains after performing the function test mode key test, the input circuit on the electronic control board has likely failed internally and the board requires replacement.
